New Update for Samsung Current Device Omnia

The date for the release of Windows Mobile 6.5 was approaching closer and closer, the cell phone manufacturers are preparing their existing devices for update. Samsung Omnia B7320 is among the top contenders that seek an upgrade from Windows Mobile 6.1 to 6.5. Not only that, a whole new version of the device is ready for the launch. It is going to be Samsung B7330 Omnia Pro that will come pre-installed with Windows Mobile 6.5.

The screen of the new Omnia is going to be slightly larger than the existing devices. Square in shape, the screen will offer a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels. In order to provide fats connectivity, HSUPA 2Mbps has been included in the set of features. Another update in the new Omnia will be the availability of HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps, whereas it was limited to 3.2 Mbps in the current version.

A number of other devices from the Omnia family will undergo the upgrade with Windows Mobile 6.5. B7610 Omnia Pro is one of them, though it belongs to the category of premium devices, unlike Samsung Omnia B7320 and B7330 that will accommodate the mid-range functionality.

Another Omnia member is ready for the launch in the form of Samsung B7300 Onmia LITE that will feature 667MHz CPU, HSDPA along with Wi-Fi, A-GPS and video recording at VGA@30 fps. Of course, it will be installed with Windows Mobile 6.5. Don’t think of waiting too long for these devices, as they are going to hit the store sin October.

1. Back-up your GDFS file and write your GDFS.

It is a GIF 89a image encoded to smg file. pack/unpackBootImage.pl is perl scripts that use to packing and unpacking gif image from and into smg file.

Requirements.
1. Perl Interpreter from ActivePerl

How to unpack bootimage.smg to gif image.
1. rename cg file to bootimage.smg
2. put pack/unpackBootImage.pl into the same folder as bootimage.smg.
3. double click on unpackBootImage.pl to extract smg file.
4. 2 files should apprear in bootimage folder. bootimage.gif and cgversion.txt bootimage.gif is a gif image file. cgversion.txt is a text file that indicated version of your cg.

How to pack gif image to bootimage.smg
1. check in bootimage folder that It have bootimage.gif and cgversion.txt.
2. double click on packBootImage.pl
3. new bootimage cg file should be in new_bootimage.smg.

PS. you can get bootimage.smg from firmware by use sbf codec extract cg39 from E6 and A1200 f/w.

All you need to perform any of the modifications described in this writeup are the following:

Motorola A1200 (aka Ming) with a MicroSD memory card (= Transflash card) installed in order to copy files to your phone.
Windows PC with at least 1 free USB port (If you have a Mac, then read http://mac.themotoguide.com/index.php )
Motorola USB data cable that plugs into the mini USB port on the bottom right of your phone and the USB port on your PC
Motorola Phone Tools (MPT) installed on your PC - this is a program that should have come on the CD that came with your phone and should be used to back up the data on your phone (contacts, calendar, etc) before attempting any of these mods.

Rar Files

Most of the files uploaded on this forum are "rar" files. These are compressed files (similar to zip files) making them smaller to download. You need to install a program that can "unrar" them before you can use them. UnzipThemAll and 7-zip are two free programs that can unrar files. (Other users use Winrar though several users have reported problems installing files unrared with this program).

To use a rar file, you download it, then use the tool to unrar it before copying the uncompressed file(s) to the SD card in your phone.

How to Copy Files To/From Your Phone
On the A1200, go to Application Launcher-->Setup-->USB Mode and ensure that “Mass Storage” is selected
Plug in the cable that connects the phone to the USB port on your PC.
Open Windows Explorer and ensure that you have “Show hidden files and folders” turned on in Explorer (Tools-->Folder Options-->View-->Show hidden files and folders)
You can now use Explorer to view the folders on your SD card on the phone. The SD card will probably be drive E: or F:. The root folder of this SD card shows directly under the Drive in Explorer – but its full path is /mmc/mmca1/ (i.e. if you copy something to the root you are copying it to /mmc/mmca1/).
You should see a folder called .system under root. If you do not see it then check you have “Show hidden files” on (see 3 above). You are only able to view/edit files on the SD card – this method does not permit you to view/edit files directly on the phone (which is why you need installer programs like MPKG and linloader to install programs on your phone).
You can now copy/cut and paste files to and from your PC to the folders on your SD card.
Unplug the phone when done. (Before unplugging, you should always use the unplug or eject hardware facility. This will ensure integrity of the filesystem on the transflash card).
Wait a couple of seconds then you can then use File Manager under Application Launcher on your phone to view these files.

How to Backup your data.
1. tap on Backup Restore Now icon to start application.
2. tap on Backup button to start backup.
3. tap on OK button to confirm backup data.
4. after backup complete dialog "Backup complete!" appear. your data should be backup into PIM.brn in folder Backup in memory card.

** Backup & Restore Now will move previous backup file into PIM1.brn, PIM2.brn, ... and it does not delete previous backup files. you should take care of this yourself.
** after that you can rename backup file or move it to anywhere.

How to fast restore lastest backup data.
1. tap on Backup Restore Now icon to start application.
2. tap on Restore button to start restore data.

How to Restore your any backup data.
1. goto backup folder that you keep a backup file (*.brn)
2. tap and hold on backup file until popup menu appear .Select Openwith menu and choise Backup & RestoreNow.
3. for security and miss tapping you should not check on 'use this program to open' box. and tap on ok button. dialog "tap on backupfile again to confirm a restore process" will appear. tap on ok button to close dialog.
4. tap on OK button to confirm restoration. you 'll see message "Start restore your addressbook, sms, mms, and email, calendar and work."
5. after restoration complete dialog "Restore complete!" appear. restart phone to get your data back.

About Backup & RestoreNow.
- It's only compress main.db, mms, and email folder by tar and gzip into MMC. so It's cannnot syncronize any data.
- It's may not work with backup and restore from and into diffenrent firmware or phone model.
